Menstrual hygiene

I was a guest on MindScope on EKO89.7FM with Segilola on Monday and before we came up, there was a caller to the previous show who said she was always shy to buy the sanitary pads for her monthly period! There are still so many myths and taboos associated with menstruation that makes some women/girls feel uncomfortable or marginalized during this period. This is one of the major reasons why Global Menstrual hygiene started in May 28th, 2014 to break these taboos and enlighten the public on the need for effective hygienic practices during menstruation. What is menstruation? It is a normal, natural and healthy biological process that maintains the female reproductive cycle. If there is no menstruation, there won’t be ovulation, hence no reproduction. Meaning it is a very important aspect of human existence, it shouldn’t be a thing anyone is ashamed of. Menstrual hygiene is the general hygienic practices during menstruation to prevent the infection of the reproductive and urinary tract in women. It includes: access to materials for absorbing bloods, clean water and soap, facilities to dispose used materials and the privacy to change as often as necessary. Hygienic practices during menses: Wash with soap water before and after changing of sanitary towels. Wrap used pad in a nylon or paper and dispose in waste containers Sanitary napkins must be changed after 6hours maximum or less if there is heavy flow. Bacteria can build up if worn for too long, can cause yeast infections with the side effects of bad odor. Reusable sanitary napkins should be washed properly, dry in the sun. Onset of menstruation doesn’t mean the girl is ready for marriage, or should start having sex. some can start as early as 8 years. #SayNoToChildBride Excercise, reduce salts and carbonated drinks, massage the back and abdomen and take some pain relievers to relieve menstrual cramps called dysmenorrhea. Let your child know that they can come to you for clarity any issue bothering them on menstruation and very other aspect of their lives. If they aren’t asking you, they are definitely asking another, which might be their peers (who doesn’t know any better) or another adult who would take advantage of them. If a man can make a child swallow his semen claiming it will make her grow fast, imagine the solution they would proffer for cramps....no dulling please. Any questions, feel free...ask in the comment session or send a DM. Thank you. Pix: After the show with the amiable Segilola and the producer Double O. Thank you great ladies for having me. I had a stop over at Ikeja Museum too, such a beautiful place! I will give you details in a bit. And remember, our live class comes up tomorrow by 10am, we have another great topic we are discussing, stay tuned.
