In reference to my last post on a parent who hit her three year old child repeatedly for a sitting on the floor while playing, I later learnt that she is always like that, anger issues kind of...
To another, it could be ignorant of the expected behavior of children at a particular age, so we hit children not because they do something wrong but because they didn’t behave the way we expect.
There are different developmental and cognitive behaviors expected from children at specific ages,(you can find them on google) and there are generally six fundamental traits of childhood parents must know that will help a great deal in dealing with their children.
The first one and the most related to this post is JOY.
Joy: a sense of inner release from care, worry,...which find external expression in boundless excitement , THIS IS THE MAIN KEY OF THE RIGHT OF THE CHILD TO PLAY!
This tract of JOY makes children happy, excited for no reason at all....I mean they are just all over the place and you are wondering “ki lon dun ninu omo yi na?(what is exciting this child like this?)especially at times when the situation is obviously unpleasant and they are playing and laughing like they just won a jackpot...
It is innate...they can’t help but be happy! It is not something they made up,...it isn’t fake, it is genuine!
So the next time you are tempted to hit your child for playing, please take a deep breath,...calm down....
think of this.....can you blame a bird for flying?
Or jeer at a fish for swimming?
Then cut your child some slack a little bit.
What you need to do is:
*to supervise the play
*ensure there is nothing that can cause bodily harm to them or others.
*explain and reason with the child if the play can cause harm or on the duration of play, there is time for everything.
*suggest alternative if the play isn’t healthy.
*once in a while when you have the time, play with the child, it’s a great connection tool for effective discipline.
Do you know one of the easiest way to help discover your child’s passion/talent/gifts is when he or she plays?
Check the pix below, what do you see?
Children must play.
