Understanding Your Parents. (Part 1)
Dear Teen,
Though it seems your parents treat you unfairly,
....they often misunderstood your words and actions,
....they want to control you,
....they compare you with others,
....they nag, yell, or hit you,
....they hurl abusive words at you and it hurts deeply,
....they treat you like a child, yet they expect you to behave like an adult,
....they hardly believe anything you say,
....when you are quiet, they say you don't care,
....when you talk back, they say you are rude,
....even when you are bold enough to air your struggles, they trivialise it as if you are making it up.....little did they know your struggles are as valid as theirs!
....sometimes it seems they want to live their lives through you, insisting on a career without seeking your opinion,
....they cheer you up when you pass/succeed and make you feel less of a human when you fail,
....they know it all and your opinion doesn't count,
"I am your mother/father, I know more than you!"
....you want to have a conversation with them about a bully or an uncle who is molesting and threatening you not to tell but they never listen,
....you are constantly under pressure to please them and they are oblivious to this fact.
....undermine your thinking faculty, unknowingly, and never allow you in family discourse,
Not because they hate you but that they don't know any better!
....it could be overwhelming and sometimes you cry and ask God, "Why me?"
....and so on and so forth.
Calm down!
Take a deep breath!
"Let me tell you a secret: The first set of people who are genuinely interested in your success are your parents." - Hellen Oladele.
Please note that despite their harsh approach, your parents love you and desire the best for you.
.....to be continued.
Lot's of love,
Aunty Hellen.
